How Digital Audio Works
A computer captures sound by measuring it at regular moments in time, called sampling, and rounding each measurement to one of a limited number of levels, called quantization. More samples and more levels both improve accuracy, at the cost of more data. Real audio at CD quality, for example, samples 44,100 times per second — this panel uses far fewer samples so the wave's shape stays visible.
